Melbourne Cup 2014 - 04-NOV-2014

Today the Melbourne Cup was running at Flemmington Racecourse and we were all heading over to Callum and Shirley's for a BBQ and to watch the big race.

First things first though, as its a public holiday (I kid you not a public holiday to let everyone watch the horse racing) we're going to Nosh for brekkie.

It's not far so we all walked round and Lily took the scooter.

I had an egg and bacon toastie (my favourite Aussie lunch), while Laura had a brekkie wrap. Lily who'd been up and eating all morning (as she'd missed dinner the previous night) opted for beans and toast.

Let me repeat that in case you didn't catch it beans and toast, not beans on toast, beans and toast (toast on the side).

It never gets old watching the waiters face when a 4 year old tells him exactly how she wants her food to be prepared / served and then repeats herself to make sure he heard her correctly the first time :-))

Ali opted for scrambled eggs on toast while Debbie had avocado on toast with bacon.

The food as always was great as were the flat whites.

Waiting on the food gave us the perfect opportunity to look over the racing form and decide what bets we were going to place.

After we'd finished Laura and Ali headed to the Tats (bookies) to put on the bets while Debbie and I walked back with Lily (on the scooter) to get organised.

Lily and Debbie made cupcakes:

to take to the BBQ and once we were ready we set off for the outdoor pool near Callum and Shirley's where Lily and Debbie went for a quick swim:

while Laura and I sat in the sun.

Around 2pm we got organise and headed to Callum and Shirley's which was only a five minute drive from the pool.

By the time we arrived Ali had already gotten there, on his motorbike, but there was still plenty of time to catch up (and organise a race day sweep) before the main race got started.

Lily made a new friend:

and they played happily together all afternoon.

The only winner on the day was Callum who had the winner in the sweep, and the race. I'm told he also had the same horse in the sweep at his work (some people have all the luck).

Afterwards we had a BBQ and a bit of a natter before heading back to Debbie and Ali's.  Luckily we'd got Lily in to her pyjamas before setting off because by the end of the road she was fast asleep.

I made it till 8:30pm before calling it a night while Laura sat up for a bit longer with Ali and Debbie watching TV.
